Approximately 50% of the words we encounter in written text come from a relatively small set of high frequency sight words. It is useful to help children develop, through practice, a set of high frequency words that he/she can identify quickly and accurately. Maryann Eeds surveyed 400 emergent reader story books and compiled a list of the most frequently used words in those texts.
