YOUR SCHOOL
COUNSELOR
|
|
A school counselor is a professional
member of the school staff who has been trained to address
the personal, academic, and career concerns of the
students. The primary role of the school counselor is to
help students as they seek to identify and achieve
personal goals as well as academic goals. The school
counselor is an advocate for the student.
School counselors work with students
individually or in groups. The counselors also work
closely with teachers, administrators, psychologists, and
other school personnel to help students reach their
academic or personal potential.
Students are encouraged to visit
their counselor if they are having any problems, academic
or personal.
|
|
Starting in 6th grade
students meet with their counselor for an
"orientation meeting" to learn about the counseling
program, get to know their counselor, and to discuss
any questions or concerns that they may have about
middle school. This is also a great
opportunity for the counselors to start to get to
know their students.
We also facilitate Team
building and cooperative learning activities, and
provide classroom guidance lessons in topics suchs
as academic integrity, study skills, bullying,
internet safety etc.
|
|
In 7th grade students meet with their counselor for
their annual review to set goals, and discuss
options for the future.
Students also participate in career planning which
involves our annual Iroquois Career Day. |
|
A large part of 8th grade
programming focuses on the transition to Niskayuna
High School. All 8th graders participate in
the high school planning process which involves
meeting their 9th grade counselor, visiting the high
school, hearing about the high school classes, and
selecting their courses for 9th grade. |
|
At all three grade levels
students meet with thier counselor rearding
academic, social, and personal issues as needed.
Counselors also work with parents and teachers
to help provide a positive school sxperience.
Please feel free to contact your child's
counselor at any time. |
