Trained and certified ESL teachers use instructional approaches that are designed for students whose first language is not English. Our ESL learning standards are identical to those for native speakers, but in addition, have a Culture Component (pdf version). (New York State ESL Learning Standards). Our philosophy recognizes that students are enabled to learn a second language
by using knowledge of their first language, that they bring valuable linguistic and cultural experiences to the educational community and that parents need to be welcomed into the school community and are essential to student success. First languages are not directly used in instruction. Students attend a centralized program at Craig Elementary School. Craig Elementary School provides much of the training opportunities and resources for the ESL department at the K-5 levels.
