The Birchwood Learning Center serves students in grades K-5 who are experiencing difficulties in acquiring, retaining, and applying skills for a variety of reasons.

Placement in the program is determined by the Committee on Special Education (CSE).

Teacher or parent makes referral to building Child Study Team.

Necessary evaluations are determined and carried out.

        Recommendation is made to CSE,

CSE identifies category of disability (typically Learning Disabled, Speech Impaired,
                or Other Health Impaired).

Specific program is recommended and outlined to address student’s special needs.

Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is drafted, outlining, student progress, special needs, and specific goals and
        objectives.

Program Types:

        Consultant Teacher Program:
This program is recommended when student needs academic practice and/ior
support to succeed in the classroom program.  It is also recommended when
        behavioral interventions are needed.

Support can be provided directly to student in or out of the classroom or indirectly
        provided via teacher consultations.

        Resource Room Program:
This program is recommended when students need academic support to succeed in the classroom.  The program may involve                     helping students complete classroom assignments, may include activities to develop specific skills using regular class materials or             adapted materials.  The program may be delivered in or out of the classroom.

        Special Class Program:
This is the most intensive level of support provided by the Learning Center.  It typically involves providing the student                                           with an individualized, developmental program in language arts or math.  It often involves the use of different materials than those          used in the regular classroom.  It is intended to develop basic skills so that the student will eventually be able to participate in the             regular class program.  It is usually carried out in the Learning Center.

"I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time."
Anna Freud (1895 - 1982)
